Combining High Energy Density and Supply-Resilience: Advancing Sodium Metal Batteries for Naval Defense Applications

Main content start

PI: William Chueh

Department: Materials Science and Engineering

Sponsor/Party: Office of Naval Research

The proposed project aims to develop a practical sodium metal battery system with high energy density and supply-chain resilience for defense applications. By focusing on applied research, clear MVP deliverables, and real-world operating conditions, we will demonstrate that SMB technology can meet the energy, power, and safety requirements for next-generation defense systems. This project will directly inform the path to commercialization and system integration of sodium-based battery technologies.
